Friday

Follow Friday is a weekly blog hop hosted by Alison Can Read and Parajunkee. This week's features Lauren Gets Literal are and FicBookReviews.

This week's question is...

What is your biggest pet peeve when it comes to books?

I actually already wrote a post about things I dislike in books. However, I'll be a little less serious here and point out that far too often people misuse words like "nonplussed" (actually means perturbed or surprised), which is something that makes me go a little crazy. I freely admit to being a total grammar nerd! So any sort of divergence from correct usage makes me twitchy.

Just like this. And then I cry a little.

This week's question is...

What's your process for writing book reviews? Any tips or suggestions you would recommend to other bloggers?

When I first started writing reviews, they were pretty terrible. (This was my first real review. Don't laugh.) Eventually, because I am bad at quantifying large qualitative concepts, I decided to split up my ratings into plot, characters, and style categories, which also helped me remember what to think about when writing the actual reviews. I've also found that it helps to wait a day or so (but not more than maybe three) before writing a review, especially for books I've really loved or hated. Otherwise you get less than helpful ravings of joy like this or (unpublished) rants.

A last thing that's always fun is to change things up a bit. My friend Chris did a Valley Girl review of Twilight, and another time a few friends and I challenged each other to write rhyming reviews. (Mine was for Harry Potter.)

  2. Oh dear, I like to think I'm a grammar and word nerd, but I am FAIL. I truly thought nonplussed meant the exact opposite >.<

  3. Hopping through. I'm with you on word choice and grammar. Things like misusing semi-colons.

  4. wrong grammar could really be annoying so far I have not encountered a book which has one OR I might just be indulged with reading that I might have passed by the grammars.

  8. As an author in my own right I have to nod my head and agree with you 100 % -- a writer has to get their terms right. The sad thing is that most of the time the author is positive they're applying the right term to the right situation blissfully unaware they blew it. I don't see any way to prevent something like that.

How can you catch something that's wrong if you're positive you're right?

I ended up going with a completely different pet peeve (if you can even call it that) Follow me back to my blog and find out what it is - http:///www.howardsherman.net

  9. I try not to be bothered by grammar if it's just two or three words. (Because, honestly, I can fail at grammar as well. xD) Though, the smaller words such as 'to' and 'too' or 'a' and 'an' really grind my gears.

I love your comments! I try to respond to them...eventually!

This is now an award-free blog. I love and totally appreciate that you thought of me, but I know myself better than to think I would be organized enough to pass them along, and that doesn't seem fair.

Finally, if you're posting a URL, the code to make it actually link to your site is <.a href="your URL">your text<./a>, without the periods.
